Lyrics for Don't Dream It's Over by Crowded House

crowded house dont dream

With its memorable melody, haunting lyrics, and persistent optimism, this song has resonated with millions of people around the world since its release in 1986. In this article, we’ll explore the deeper meaning behind “Don’t Dream It’s Over” and how it speaks to our universal struggles and dreams. Since mid-March, TikTok has spent $5 million on TV ads opposing the legislation, according to AdImpact, an advertising tracking firm. The ads have included a diverse group of content creators, including a nun, extolling the positive impacts of the platform on their lives and arguing a ban would trample on the 1st Amendment.

Additionally, the song’s call for human connection and the importance of cherishing our relationships with others deeply resonates within me. It serves as a reminder to nurture the connections that bring joy and light into our lives, as they can be a source of liberation and release. In 1991, English musician Paul Young covered "Don't Dream It's Over" on his first compilation album, From Time to Time – The Singles Collection (1991). Young's version, released by Columbia, was produced by Dan Hartman, and featured Paul Carrack singing the fourth chorus and performing the keyboard and synthesizers. All tracks on vinyl, from the album Crowded House except the extended version of "Don't Dream It's Over".

Songwriting and musical influences

One of the most dynamic bass player/songwriters of his time, Chris is the only member of Yes who has been with the band since they formed in 1968. Crowded House’s lead singer and songwriter Neil Finn has said that “Don’t Dream It’s Over” was inspired by his experiences living in Los Angeles and feeling disconnected from his homeland of New Zealand. The song was written during a time when Finn was struggling with homesickness and a sense of displacement, which inspired him to write a song that expressed the human desire for connection and a sense of belonging.

The Inspiration Behind the Song

Lawmakers had failed to act despite efforts to protect children online, safeguard users’ privacy and make companies more liable for content posted on their platforms, among other measures. But the TikTok ban reflects widespread concerns from lawmakers about China. The company has indicated that it would likely go to court to try to block the law if it passes, arguing it would deprive the app’s millions of users of their 1st Amendment rights.

The opening lines (“There is freedom within, there is freedom without / Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup”) suggest that despite our limitations, we still have the capacity to find meaning and wonder in the world. The chorus (“Hey now, hey now / Don’t dream it’s over / Hey now, hey now / When the world comes in / They come, they come / To build a wall between us / We know they won’t win”) embodies an unshakable optimism, reminding us that despite the challenges we face, we can persevere as long as we don’t give up on our dreams. Following the 1996 break-up of Crowded House, the members embarked upon a variety of projects. Neil Finn released two solo studio albums, Try Whistling This (1998) and One Nil (2001), as well as two live albums, Sessions at West 54th (2000) and 7 Worlds Collide (2001).

The song has become a constant companion throughout various phases of my life, always providing comfort and solace. It has accompanied me during times of uncertainty, reminding me to stay resilient and not give up on my dreams. "Don't Dream It's Over" is written and composed in the key of E-flat major[13] and is set in the time signature of common time with a tempo of 82 beats per minute. He said he thinks there could have been less restrictive ways to go after the company that wouldn’t result in a total ban or threaten free speech. In 2020, federal courts blocked an executive order issued by then-President Trump to ban TikTok after the company sued on the grounds that the order violated free speech and due process rights.

His administration brokered a deal that would have had U.S. corporations Oracle and Walmart take a large stake in TikTok. The sale never went through for a number of reasons; one was China, which imposed stricter export controls on its technology providers. After UMG pulled its catalog from the app and as political pressure - or even a domestic ban - threatens its viability, artists and their creative and business teams are pondering a world without it. The House’s overwhelming vote to ban TikTok unless it is freed from Chinese control suggests that a ban might be coming soon. The new multi-million-dollar deal will see the leading independent publisher acquiring Finn’s music publishing catalog and writer’s share of public performance for his work with Crowded House, in addition to his solo material.

The Meaning Behind “Don’t Dream It’s Over” by Crowded House

The decision by House Republicans to include TikTok as part of a larger foreign aid package, a priority for President Biden with broad congressional support for Ukraine and Israel, fast-tracked the ban after an earlier version had stalled in the Senate. A standalone bill with a shorter, six-month selling deadline passed the House in March by an overwhelming bipartisan vote as Democrats and Republicans voiced national security concerns about the app’s owner, the Chinese technology firm ByteDance Ltd. “I look forward to seeing Primary Wave’s plan for the ongoing care of my songs.

All live tracks, recorded on Phil Jupitus Show at BBC GLR, 21 June 1996. Unlike the Oscars or the Golden Globes, these awards didn’t go to actors, directors or screenwriters. Along with live gigs, a new single has been released — Teenage Summer — with an unexpected album on the way, which will be the first since the band parted ways in 2018.

Despite the universality of the song and Finn’s seeming lack of recollection of the song’s origin, he later revealed to Consequence that the song was ‘in a sense’ written as a ‘private message from me to someone who was withdrawing from their world’. “Don’t Dream It’s Over” is a song about remaining hopeful in the face of adversity. The song’s message seems to be told from the perspective of a relationship, with the narrator urging his loved one to not give up.

Crowded House is no different as the Australian band — plus New Zealander Neil — release their eight studio album Gravity Stairs next month. In this sixth episode of The Story Behind the Song, host Peter Csathy interviews Finn about “Don’t Dream It’s Over” and how it came to be. The two also discuss Neil’s beautiful love song “Fall at Your Feet” from Crowded House’s third album, Woodface.

Old Time Music is proud to have such a passionate and talented team of writers who share their love for music with our readers. We hope you enjoy the articles and insights they bring to our platform. Finn admitted that producer Mitchell Froom was responsible for the sound of the song. He suggested some essential elements of the song, including the bass line and the Hammond organ. “He filled in quite a few areas that we weren’t covering,” bassist Nick Seymour later commented.

The collection that gives Stewart the most pleasure is his Pre-Raphaelite paintings, which he believes to be one of the largest in the world. He reminds us, "You have no idea how big those paintings are until you're standing next to them." Stewart explained that he would give the helmet back to Johnson if the seven-time champ ever asked.

Stewart acquired the property back in the early 2000s, razed an existing house and completed the so-called “Hidden Hollow Ranch” in 2011. It’s showcased by a 19,714-square-foot house crafted from lodge pole pine culled from the Northern Rockies, and comes complete with six bedrooms and 11 baths—all resting on over 400 acres of land boasting a 9-acre lake stocked with bass.

The British rocker, 78, has officially listed his European-style Beverly Hills estate for $70 million. It was specially designed for Stewart in the 90s by celeb-favorite architect Richard Landry, who also built Mark Wahlberg's Beverly Hills compound and Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen's former Brentwood mega-mansion. Refining these collections into a coherent, atmospheric, technologically advanced house has kept Hendrix/Allardyce busy since ground was broken in the early 1990s. "Rod wanted the house to feel like an English country estate," says Allardyce. "To us that meant creating the home of a well-traveled individual who has amassed a collection of very fine antiques, art and decorative arts over a lifetime, and combining them in a Neoclassical-style interior."

That breaks down into $1,522 per square foot and a monthly payment of $138,969. It was later dethroned by the massive 550-acre Big Tree Farm, a rural retreat with more than 50,000 square feet of interior space that hit the market in September 2022 for a mindboggling $47.9 million. The main property boasts an impressive 20,000 square feet of living space, including six bedrooms, eight full baths, and three half baths.

People say, “But what if someone’s family that was on the bridge sees that? It existed in Texas, obviously a staple of free speech, but while L.A. And New York have virtue signaled their way into what’s right and what’s wrong. “We’ve talked about it a bunch of times, but to make the decision she had to make first of all, and to execute and do what she’s doing is super hard.

Home to a racing legend

He and Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Doug Boles primarily focused on his basement, which includes an arcade room, a bar, a poker table, and dozens of lids from some of the greatest names in motorsports history. The NASCAR legends were prominent, but Stewart also had helmets from seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton, two-time Indy 500 winner Al Unser Jr., and seven-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher. Other features include a two-story waterfall and trout stream in the entryway.

He is also a self-proclaimed fan of video games with a collection of arcade machines rivaling Aladdin’s Castle. “It’s Jimmie Johnson’s seventh championship-winning helmet,” Stewart explained. [I] got done with my interviews, went to the stage, congratulated him, gave him a hug. Stewart continued and showed off two particular helmets with unique stories attached. It was the helmet that the now-retired driver wore during the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway in 2011 when he and Stewart battled for the title.

The female race car drivers are way tougher than all of us men because to have to take yourself out of a car to have a baby …. To sit there and do what you love doing and have your career best finishing points last year and then make a decision you want to start a family. Smoke provided the look during an exclusive tour of his home in Columbia, Ind., which also surfaced on Zillow.

The home was previously on the market for $30 million in 2022 but was taken off in December of that year. The other helmet, which Stewart identified as his favorite, used to belong to Johnson. The seven-time champion actually gave away the helmet that he wore during the final race of the 2016 season so that it could join Stewart’s collection.

At the center sits a 20,000-square-foot cabin built from lodgepole pine from the northern Rocky Mountains. Racecar driver Tony Stewart is chasing history in Indiana, listing his palatial 415-acre retreat for $30 million. It’s the priciest home currently for sale in the state, and if Stewart gets his price, it will be one of the most expensive deals ever in the area. NASCAR champion Tony Stewart has relisted his spectacular rural estate at a lower price, and pictures show a property that lives up to the claim that it's the "finest property ever offered for sale in the state of Indiana." On the contrary, it’s freeing to know that we are focused on our standup comedy and podcasts instead of being focused on L.A.

It is the perfect blend of entertainment and relaxation." Lovingly named Hidden Hollow Ranch, Tony Stewart’s house and surrounding property are truly impressive, consisting of 415 wooded acres of land with a 9-acre stocked lake and a hunting preserve filled with turkey, deer, and elk. Built in 2011, the two-story mansion sits on 415 wooded acres of property in Columbus, Ind.

Smoke provided a glimpse at his collection that includes KISS pinball machines, a “Guitar Hero” cabinet, “Qbert,” and several other classic games. He explained that he loves video games, but he also uses the different machines to help him improve on the wildly varied tracks where he has competed. Stewart is a three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, an IndyCar champion, the reigning SRX champion, a one-time USAC National Midget Series Champion, and an IROC champion.

Today we’re taking a closer look at the sprawling home of three-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion Tony Stewart — a spectacular 20,000-square-foot log home set amidst a 415-acre hunting preserve in Columbus, Indiana. Other structures include a 3,500-square-foot guesthouse and workshop. The estate can be either be used privately or commercially, as it has been zoned as a bed and breakfast. In terms of design, the great room is more or less modeled after a Bass Pro Shop. A wooden bridge traverses a koi-filled creek at the entry, leading to a two-story waterfall dotted with realistic wildlife figures including a deer, ram and turkey. A professional NASCAR driver for two decades, 52-year-old Stewart retired after the 2016 season as a three-time Cup Series champion and was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2020.

Known as Hidden Hollow Ranch, the main residence spans nearly 20,000 square feet and features a massive 8,700-gallon freshwater indoor aquarium in the great room. There’s also a separate nearly 3,500-square-foot guest house. The first level of the home comes with several fun amenities — including a bowling alley, a game area, a golf simulator and a lighted onyx bar all within one area. Over in the great room of the Hidden Hollow Ranch is an 8,700-gallon freshwater aquarium.

He began opening for comics like Joe Rogan and Jeff Ross; the latter helped Hinchcliffe land writing gigs on “Comedy Central Roast,” where he penned Martha Stewart’s raunchy zingers for Justin Bieber, among others. In 2013, he launched his podcast “Kill Tony” with co-host Brian Redban. The podcast is famed for its “Bucket of Destiny,” giving aspiring and seasoned comedians a shot at performing a stand-up set for 60 seconds and receiving feedback from judges — and getting roasted. In 2020, Hinchcliffe moved himself and the podcast to Austin, Texas, where he continues to put out weekly episodes. It's a natural move for a comedian who has made a name with his skilled impressions of celebrities like Howard Stern, Jeff Goldblum, John Oliver, and now Trump himself.

According to online property sites, that asking price breaks down to $1,141 per square foot and a monthly payment of $141,018. That’s entirely on me, but if someone didn’t know comedy and wasn’t a high-level stand-up fan, they would go, “Oh, you cannot do that. You cannot bring up that kind of subject matter.” I think people must realize that we are professionals.

Or New York City cliches like auditions, pitch meetings, voiceover gigs, writing jobs and other distractions that, at best, leave you with a boss, a lack of creative control and probably wanting more money. By having our priorities be our own podcasts and doing live shows regularly we get better at those two things regularly and can all relate to one another and do each others’ shows to promote the projects we care about. And New York come to us now — we only go there when we have to do big shows. People can have a career from anywhere now but I still think it’s important to be around people that you respect and have fun with.

That price did not attract a buyer, and Stewart relisted his 415-acre estate for $22.5 million on April 12, 2024. I couldn’t believe it when that video came out, and it was one of my former openers doing it. It was so dumbfounding to me because it was a joke, and my stance is that comedians should never apologize for a joke, should never stop working if everyone comes after them and should never slow down. In fact, they should utilize anything that happens to them for more material. That line is exactly where I love to exist, and I push that to the limits.

Highlights include a massive formal dining room that can accommodate over 20 guests, a speakeasy, a movie theater, two gyms, and a wood-paneled library. Elsewhere, Stewart’s pad continues to impress with a wine room, an eat-in chef’s kitchen, and a dedicated tearoom. (Very British!) Outside, the grounds sport a five-car garage, dual motor courts, a swimming pool, and an outdoor kitchen. Tony Stewart‘s mansion is back on the market again at a “lower” price. According to multiple outlets, the NASCAR legend’s 400-acre Hidden Hollow Ranch in Columbus, Indiana, has been relisted at $22.5 million.

Head to the Arts District for a great burger served on what may be Los Angeles’s best patio. The burger at Everson Royce Bar starts with a single patty of prime beef chuck that’s topped with Tillamook cheddar and Dijonnaise sandwiched between an egg brioche bun. In total the burger clocks in at $11 for a single, which leaves room in the budget for a beer or a cocktail off its extensive bar menu. Add the melted butter, egg, sourdough discard, all-purpose flour, and salt to the same bowl.

Stir well with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms. Not enough can be said about a burger that is always good. On any given day, at either of its locations, the burger at Goldburger is the same great smash burger. It is consistently served hot and fresh off the grill, and will always satisfy a craving. It’s hard to overstate the importance of Tommy’s to the greater LA burger scene.

Sourdough starter needs to be fed consistently, and with these feedings, it is multiplying in size. If you aren’t using your starter daily, then you’ll need to remove a portion of it to keep the starter at a healthy size. The portion that you remove is said to be discarded — though I strongly suggest keeping all of it for use in discard recipes like all of these.

The burger here leans diner-style with its thick patty and fresh bun served up on a tray with checkerboard paper. While these are best served right away, you can store them in an airtight bag or container at room temperature for a few days. This will take approximately 90 minutes, depending on the temperature. It’s hard to imagine the burger at Moo’s Craft Barbecue being the most talked-about item at the moment, but it’s true. This thick, peppery, smoked burger is the toast of the town right now, in part because it serves as an antidote to so much smash burger fascination. Served with raw white onions and pickles to cut through the fat, this is undoubtedly the burger of the moment. Lowboy may be known first and foremost as a bar, but it's the burger at this Echo Park neighborhood hang that makes it such a standout.

Sourdough buns are risen strictly utilizing wild yeast and long fermentation times, yielding deeper sourdough flavor and better digestibility because of the fermentation process. Sourdough discard recipes are quicker, adding commercial yeast to bring about the rise. Discard recipes still have some sourdough flavor, but it is much milder, and the health benefits are not as impactful. So in honor of warmer temperatures and cooking outdoors, here is a wonderful recipe for sourdough discard hamburger buns.

It’s no wonder that burgers appear on so many menus across the city. From the old-school burger counters to the walk-up windows, street stands, and sit-down spots that come complete with cloth napkins, here are some of LA’s best burgers. South Bay burger fans can find one of LA’s best burgers at Proudly Serving’s permanent location in Hermosa Beach. In addition to the Proudly Serving double smash burger, find a pastrami burger, a brunch burger, and more, on the menu. Born from the nation’s obsession with beef coupled with the modern highway system, the humble burger can be high-end or low — grabbed quickly via drive-thru or sought out as a destination. It’s hard to say what makes a perfect burger, simply because there are so many different iterations of the seemingly simple beef and bun device.

When kneading on the countertop, a small amount of flour may be helpful to keep the dough from sticking, but too much can affect the texture of the buns when they’re baked. I find that the dough doesn’t need a floured surface after the first rise, but is pretty easily worked with. These restaurants serve uniquely flavorful burgers with mouth-watering toppings. When you want food in El Paso, TX, come to Hamburger House! At legendary Venice dive Hinano Cafe, burgers are griddled right behind the bar. Open since 1962, this beachside watering hole still has the same sawdust-covered floor charm after all these years. Hike from a winery to a waterfall in Elkin, passing through an "Enchanted Forest"

elkin nc to charlotte nc

Private landowners have to be convinced to let trails go through their land. And people have to do the physical work of clearing a path and keeping it clear. The total straight line flight distance from Charlotte, NC to Elkin, NC is 70 miles.

While it’s an easy-to-reach waterfall from the namesake trailhead, there are multiple options for you to reach the Yadkin Valley waterfall. When you emerge from the campground you’ll be on Martin Byrd Road. You can walk on the trail next to the farm and stay off the road. In the distance in the above picture you can see the parking area for Carter Falls, at the intersection with Pleasant Ridge Road. Thanks to its lovely downtown, beautiful surroundings, and yes, the wineries, we think you’ll never stop finding fun things to do in Elkin.

The driving distance from Charlotte, North Carolina to Elkin, North Carolina is:

When you think of Carolina beaches, your first thought is probably Myrtle Beach. Or, if you watch as much Netflix as I did throughout the pandemic, the Outer Banks. While those are popular spots, I've always been a bigger fan of Wrightsville Beach. The water is cleaner and the beaches a little less crowded than Myrtle, and it's a much closer drive than the Outer Banks. While I no longer live there, I was always finding new hidden gems when I did call the city home.

Fall

A hydro station was built here in 1914 and helped power the town for many years. Just make sure that you're using a great credit card for gas and maximizing your hotel or Airbnb bookings. The “Enchanted Pine Forest” exemplifies the cooperation that went into creating this trail system. We parked at Grassy Creek Vineyard and Winery, 235 Chatham Cottage Circle, State Road, North Carolina.

Architecturally, the historic Town of Elkin NC has kept the visual feel of an early- to mid-1900s main drag. This hike might not compare to the ruggedness of nearby Stone Mountain State Park. But it’s definitely worth a walk, and warrants Elkin Parks and Recreation’s inclusion on the list.

Out and back was about 4.5 miles, including some rambling around the waterfall. Except for the descent to the lower falls, which was aided by a rope suspended between trees, the walk was easy. Events have become a summertime monthly event and continue each year. Cruise events involve parking along Main Street as well as cruising around the downtown streets.

But with plenty of air conditioning and water-based activities, it's still a great time to visit the city. Fall is also an excellent time to visit, with fewer visitors, and temperatures ranging from highs in the low 80s F in September to upper 50s F in November. Lows hover around 60 degrees F (15.5 degrees C) at the beginning of the season and drop to 32 degrees F (0 degrees C) by December.

Map of driving directions from Charlotte, NC to Elkin, NC

You’ll pass a footbridge and what looks like an abandoned structure on the left before eventually reaching the parking lot. The straight line flight distance is 5 miles less than driving on roads, which means the driving distance is roughly 1.1x of the flight distance. North Carolina is centrally located on the East Coast of the United States, which means it’s within a day’s drive or flight from cities throughout the Northeast, Midwest and South. With nonstop flights to international airports and the nation’s second-largest state-run highway and ferry systems, it’s easy to get where you’re going – and enjoy the ride along the way. You have a choice of the Carter Falls Trail, which leads to the upper part of the falls, or the Powerhouse Trail, which leads to the base of the falls. If you want to experience both the top and bottom of the falls, it doesn’t matter which trail you take, because you can make a loop of it.

The idea of forest bathing is that it’s meant to be done in solitude as a sort of nature therapy. It’s a half mile trail, so if you walked the whole thing and came back you’d add a mile to your trek. Read more about the Forest Bathing trail in Winston-Salem Journal. Creating these trails takes a tremendous amount of commitment and cooperation. An episode of Away Message , the podcast from Our State Magazine, explores how Elkin became a trail town. People have to come to agreement about where the trails should go.

The bridge, and Harris Fields Vineyards, will be part of Camino de Vino, which will connect four vineyards in all. In 1914, Carter Falls Power Co. built a hydro-electric power plant at Carter Falls. Water flowed in a chute to the bottom of the falls, where a 150-horsepower dynamo created electricity that was carried to Elkin along power lines. We don’t want to ruin the surprise, so we’re not including all the pictures we took, but we did see a couple of bears, a squirrel and a fox too.

At the base of upper falls, you’ll get a couple of viewpoints, with one right next to it. With the full itinerary planned out, we can estimateyour total travel time for this trip. Your plane flies much faster than a car, so the flight time is about 1/2th of the time it would take to drive.

And much to their surprise, they found something beyond what they were searching for in the charming town of Elkin. It was in the heart of the people. We invite you to come and Explore Elkin. Come and experience the beauty of the river, bike and hiking trails, arts and music festivals, wineries and breweries, local restaurants, food truck festivals, and much more.
