While it’s an easy-to-reach waterfall from the namesake trailhead, there are multiple options for you to reach the Yadkin Valley waterfall. When you emerge from the campground you’ll be on Martin Byrd Road. You can walk on the trail next to the farm and stay off the road. When you think of Carolina beaches, your first thought is probably Myrtle Beach. Or, if you watch as much Netflix as I did throughout the pandemic, the Outer Banks. While those are popular spots, I've always been a bigger fan of Wrightsville Beach. The water is cleaner and the beaches a little less crowded than Myrtle, and it's a much closer drive than the Outer Banks. While I no longer live there, I was always finding new hidden gems when I did call the city home.
Fall
A hydro station was built here in 1914 and helped power the town for many years. Just make sure that you're using a great credit card for gas and maximizing your hotel or Airbnb bookings. The “Enchanted Pine Forest” exemplifies the cooperation that went into creating this trail system. We parked at Grassy Creek Vineyard and Winery, 235 Chatham Cottage Circle, State Road, North Carolina.
Architecturally, the historic Town of Elkin NC has kept the visual feel of an early- to mid-1900s main drag. This hike might not compare to the ruggedness of nearby Stone Mountain State Park. But it’s definitely worth a walk, and warrants Elkin Parks and Recreation’s inclusion on the list.

Out and back was about 4.5 miles, including some rambling around the waterfall. Except for the descent to the lower falls, which was aided by a rope suspended between trees, the walk was easy. Events have become a summertime monthly event and continue each year. Cruise events involve parking along Main Street as well as cruising around the downtown streets.
But with plenty of air conditioning and water-based activities, it's still a great time to visit the city. The bridge, and Harris Fields Vineyards, will be part of Camino de Vino, which will connect four vineyards in all. In 1914, Carter Falls Power Co. built a hydro-electric power plant at Carter Falls. Water flowed in a chute to the bottom of the falls, where a 150-horsepower dynamo created electricity that was carried to Elkin along power lines. We don’t want to ruin the surprise, so we’re not including all the pictures we took, but we did see a couple of bears, a squirrel and a fox too.
