The name Neewo comes from the Ojibwa word niiwogonagizi, meaning fourth (typically of the month).[13] This is a direct naming as he is the fourth child in the family. After tough times befall her family, Nokomis dreams the location of a deer, which once it was hunted and killed, saved the family from starvation.
