I asked what it's for and she is unable to tell me. She asked if the address on my license is the correct one and I said yes. The address was different in the system, so she said that's probably why I never got a bill. We have been to this location a handful of times since we lived at the previous address and were never turned away. How can you ask someone to pay a 7 year old bill that you don't even know what it's for? I have been to this clinic too many times to recall with my family.

Which doesn’t mean the Victorian-era archeologists weren’t still scandalized by what they found. According to an 1896 edition of The English Illustrated Magazine, a House of the Vettii painting “only suitable to that barbarous period of Europe’s history [was] very properly… covered over” before the dig continued. Overall the evidence furnished by the House of the Vettii offers key insights into domestic architecture and interior decoration in the last days of the city of Pompeii.

The rooms laid out on the left of the entrance hall are decorated with mythological subjects, which are described below. “The House of the Vetti is like the history of Pompeii and actually of Roman society within one house,” Pompeii’s director, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, gushed as he showed off an area of the domus known as the Cupid Rooms last month. "But it is also a story about the social life of the Pompeiian society and actually the Roman world in this phase of history."
Plan
The Guardian reports that the House of the Vettii was located in one of Pompeii’s wealthy neighborhoods. The property included statues, gardens, fountains, vibrant — and sometimes erotic — frescoes, and even a brothel. Although the house partially opened in 2016, it closed again in 2020 to allow for complete restoration work before finally reopening on January 9.

This luxurious residence houses an impressive collection of Fresco decorations typical of the wall paintings in the houses of rich Pompeian traders. The excavation techniques used made it possible to preserve, in almost all the rooms in the complex, the fourth-style figure paintings completed after the earthquake of 62 A.D.. The more richly decorated rooms overlook the peristylium, including the living room with the frieze of Cupids which carry out the main productive activities of that time, from selling wine to cleaning clothes, cultivating flowers to harvesting, jewellery making to creating perfumes. The lararium painting is found in the kitchen area; a graffiti at the entrance of the house indicates that the prostitute, Eutychus, who was a slave offering herself for two Asses, carried out her affairs in the adjacent room, decorated with a number of erotic paintings. The garden of the peristyle (colonnaded garden), which had a complex system of water channels and small fountains, has been restored with the inclusion of copies of the original statues, including a unique statue of its kind depicting Priapus, the god of fertility.
This scene depicts King Minos's wife, Pasiphae, and the craftsman Daedalus, whom Pasiphae ordered to construct a cow so she could sleep with her husbands treasured bull. Her lust towards the bull was a consequence of King Minos refusing to sacrifice the bull to Poseidon, angering the god who punished King Minos by making Pasiphae lust after the bull. Daedalus and his son Icarus were punished through imprisonment by King Minos for his assistance, leading into the famous myth of a winged escape from Crete. This mythological scene is located on the east wall of the north triclinium, which is located next to the large peristyle.
Pompeii home owned by two former slaves more than 1,900 years ago is restored to its former glory - Daily Mail
Pompeii home owned by two former slaves more than 1,900 years ago is restored to its former glory.
Tucked within the heart of the illustrious Pompeii Archaeological Park, stands the House of the Vettii, a captivating testament to the sophistication and grandeur of ancient Roman life. A rare survivor of the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, this residential structure offers invaluable insights into the architectural prowess, artistic sensibilities, and daily routines of its former inhabitants. Beginning with the Renaissance interest in all things classical, architectural historians and archaeologists have been debating the form and function of ancient Roman houses for several hundred years. The interest in the domestic architectural form was fueled further by the re-discovery, in the middle of the eighteenth century, of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and other sites destroyed by Vesuvius. Buried by a volcanic eruption two thousand years ago, this Roman house was the epitome of wealth and style. On Tuesday, officials unveiled the newly restored home, welcoming tourists to observe the ancient architecture and elegant frescoes.

The House of Vettii, Domus Vettiorum in Latin, likely belonged to two former slaves who became rich through the wine trade. The new restoration project, which began in 2016 under the direction of Massimo Osanna, has involved a wide range of professionals including archaeologists, architects, restorers, engineers, structural engineers and experts on gardening. "The House of the Vettii is like the history of Pompeii and actually of Roman society within one house," Pompeii's director, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, said as he showed off an area known as the Cupid Rooms. The House of the Vettii, a significant point of interest within the Pompeii Archaeological Park, is conveniently located in the Regio VI district. As you enter the park from the main Porta Marina entrance, head east on Via dell’Abbondanza, one of the main streets of ancient Pompeii. The House of the Vettii in Pompeii, named after its presumed owners, the Vettii brothers, served as a residential building with a distinct societal role. This grandiose domicile was a symbol of wealth and status, intended to display the prosperity of the Vettii, successful freedmen who ascended the social ladder through commerce.

It stands out as one of the most complex archaeological heritage restoration projects of the last few decades. It has proved particularly difficult to remove the layers of wax applied to the frescoes in the past with the intention of protecting and enhancing them. Unfortunately, this restoration method has proved to be extremely harmful and has obscured many of the details of the elegant paintings, with depictions of fantastic architecture and mythological scenes.
In addition to having part of their names in common, they shared a common past — not as descendants of noble Roman families accustomed to opulence, but rather, Pompeii experts say, almost certainly, as once enslaved men who were later freed. That is delighting tourists and rewarding experts with tantalizing fresh insights into the everyday life of what is one of the most celebrated remnants of the ancient world. The unveiling of the restored home is yet another sign of the rebirth of Pompeii, which followed decades of modern bureaucratic neglect, flooding and pillaging by thieves in search of artifacts to sell. Almost 2,000 years ago, Mount Vesuvius erupted and smothered the Roman town of Pompeii.
"We're seeing here the last phase of the Pompeian wall painting with incredible details, so you can stand before these images for hours and still discover new details," he added ahead of Tuesday's reopening. Another room, near the kitchen, is decorated with graphic erotic wall art and archaeologists believe this room would have been used as a brothel, something that was common in the homes of the elite at the time, as prostitution was permitted both socially and legally in Pompeii. Although the images depicted on the walls of the brothels are often sensual and alluring, the sex workers of Pompeii were enslaved people. In addition to the Cupid Rooms, visitors will see bronze and marble statues inside the home, planted gardens, marble fountains, and walls and walls of extravagant art depicting sacrifices, hunts, erotic scenes and Greek mythology.
The patron-client system revolved around asymmetrical social relationships whereby lower ranking clients were bound to their patrons by the qualities of trust (fides) and dutifulness (pietas). Governed by ancestral custom (mos maiorum), clients would seek support and favors from the patron; in turn the patron provided protection, support, and benefaction, collectively known as patrocinium. This system had changed somewhat by the time of the brothers Vettii and it is unclear to what extent the patron-client system factored in their lives or in their own domestic sphere.
It offers visitors a glimpse of Ancient Roman life in the corner of Italy frozen in time after Mount Vesuvius's eruption in 79 AD. In the living room, known as the Hall of Pentheus, a fresco depicts Hercules as a child, crushing two snakes, in an illustration of an episode from the Greek hero's life. Mr Zuchtriegel said fresh "readings" of the revived fresco painting reveal the "dreams and imagination and anxieties of the owners because they lived between these images'', which include Greek mythological figures. The house was constructed using a variety of materials, including opus craticium (a framework of timber filled in with rubble), opus incertum (small stones set in concrete), and opus reticulatum (a diamond pattern of small, pyramidal stones).

Domestic spaces, in particular, offer a rich resource for examining ancient lives that, in some cases, ended abruptly. Pompeii was thriving up until the moment of its destruction and in studying its life interrupted, we arrive at important insights about what it was like to live in the Roman Mediterranean. The final mythological scene in the south-east triclinium is Achilles on Skyros, painted on the east wall. After learning that Achilles would die during the Trojan War, his mother, Thetis, sent him to live on the island of Skyros. Odysseus displays gifts in front of the King's daughter, including arms and armor. The final mythological scene in the southern triclinium is the Infant Herakles strangling the snakes, located on the north wall.

After being welcomed into Olympus by the god, Ixion grew to lust after Zeus's wife, Hera. After Ixion attempts to seduce her, Zeus creates the cloud goddess Nephele in the image of Hera. As punishment, Zeus banishes Ixion from Olympus and orders Hermes to tie Ixion to a winged fiery wheel, which is to spin for eternity. Beyond the twelve mythological paintings, many more artworks are displayed in the House of the Vettii. The next room is decorated with frescoes depicting the struggle between Cupid and Pan, Cyparissus who is transformed into a cypress tree after killing a sacred stag and, lastly, some images of Jupiter in the upper section of the wall. The two rooms (alae) opening off the Atrium just before it leads into the garden have frescoes painted on a yellow background; these depict a cock fight on the left, and two medallions portraying the heads of Medusa and Silenus on the right.

Richly decorated with impeccably preserved frescoes — including the Cupid Rooms, which reveal a 15cm-high frieze of cupids preparing for a banquet — the house is considered one of the most outstanding examples of first-century Roman art. "We're seeing here the last phase of the Pompeian wall painting with incredible details, so you can stand before these images for hours and still discover new details. The newly restored remains of an opulent house in Pompeii has offered visitors an exceptional peek at details of domestic life in the doomed Roman city.
The house itself is architecturally significant not only because of its size but also because of the indications it gives of important changes that were underway in the design of Roman houses during the third quarter of the first century C.E. A section of the 1st century CE cupids frieze from the triclinium or dining room from the House of the Vetti in Pompeii. The frieze depicts cupids selling flowers and perfumes and as workers who sell flowers, make wine and work gold. Leaving the living room and following the Peristyle we find a few rooms set to one side and thought to have been reserved for women (gynaeceum) , where we can see a Triclinium and a Cubiculum opposite a small garden. Two frescoes in this area depict Odysseus recognising Achilles, and Auge surprised by a drunken Hercules. The decision to site them here can probably be explained by the desire of the masters of the house to underline their wealth and importance.

The stone-lined basin for collecting rainwater (impluvium) lies at the center of the atrium. This larger atrium communicates directly with the peristyle (an open courtyard surrounded by fluted Doric columns) by means of a set of folding doors. The smaller atrium was the focus of the service portion of the house, while the peristyle and its well-appointed rooms was meant for entertainment and dining. The final mythological scene in the south-east triclinium is Cyparissus on the north wall.

The only surviving mythological scene in the triclinium next to the small peristyle is Herakles and Auge, painted on south wall. This scene depicts the myth of the rape of Auge, who was the daughter of the King of Taega and the priestess of Athena, by a drunken Herakles. The second mythological scene in the southern triclinium is the Punishment of Dirce, which is located on the south wall.
Revealing the Risqué Art of Pompeii’s House of the Vettii
The office of the head of household (paterfamilias), known as the tablinum, links the public part of the house (pars urbana) to the private part of the house (pars rustica). This latter area often focuses on an open, colonnaded courtyard (peristylium) and serves as the center of family life, with the kitchen (culina), dining room(s) (triclinium or oecus), and often a small garden (hortus). Many houses also had a second level that may have contained additional sleeping spaces and perhaps storage. A house is, of course, a dwelling—but it is also a stage on which the rituals of daily life and social hierarchy would be performed.

The garden also has ancient species of plants cultivated in the nursery within the Park as a part of a more wide-ranging project designed to enhance historic gardens and the cultivation of green areas of the ancient city through partnerships with local farmers and plant growers. The newly restored remains of an opulent house in Pompeii that likely belonged to two former slaves who became rich through the wine trade offer visitors an exceptional peek at details of domestic life in the doomed Roman city. One of its most famous frescoes is right by the doorway to the house and depicts Priapus, the Greek god of fertility, weighing his gigantic penis on a set of scales leaning against a bag of money. An image that was likely supposed to symbolize the owners' wealth and perhaps to impress (or intimidate) the neighbors. Generally entered from the street via a narrow doorway (fauces), the large centralized reception hall (atrium) is flanked by wings (alae) and often bounded by bedrooms (cubicula).
There are various traces of the life of the poor, in particular a room adjoining the kitchen in the slaves’ quarters which is decorated with small erotic paintings. The room was originally fitted with an iron door to ensure that access was restricted only to adult men. It has been suggested that the room was used for prostitution, a hypothesis that appears to be confirmed by the discovery of an inscription on the left wall of the vestibulum (entrance hall). The inscription refers to a woman named Eutychis, “a Greek woman of pleasant manners”, who was offered for two asses (copper coins) (Eutychis Graeca a(ssibus) II moribus bellis). Besides the beauty of ancient art and architecture, this find offers an extraordinary insight into ancient society, its stratification and customs.

This strategic location within the archaeological site ensures easy accessibility for all visitors keen to glimpse into Pompeii’s illustrious past. In recent years, however, they have also started broadening their focus, excavating sites such as a middle-class home and an enslaved family’s living quarters. In the cubiculum next to the large atrium, Ariadne abandoned by Theseus is painted on the north wall.

The fan-favorite indie found footage horror franchise is back with a new installment that takes us back into the world of Stephen Cognetti’s surprisingly complex lore. Deadly Blessing
Cognetti’s ambitions for Hell House LLC were high—some might say a little too high, in part due to some questionable VFX employed throughout the films, which don’t do justice to the storyteller’s grand vision. Fortunately, the backstory Cognetti created regarding the Abbadon’s owner, Andrew Tully—a “latter-day Dante” who sought to create a gateway to hell on the hotel’s premises—provided plenty of material for the sequels. Joel Anderson’s Lake Mungo (2008) flew under the radar when it was initially released. But Cognetti has cited the eerie, faux-documentary from Australia—about a grieving family attempting to come to terms with their daughter’s drowning and subsequent haunting of the family home—as a major as inspiration on the Hell House LLC trilogy.

The film opens with Wendy Mallet recounting the tragic disappearance of her son, Jackson, who entered the abandoned Abaddon Hotel over a year ago and never returned. A distressing video shows Jackson desperately running through the hotel, experiencing a mental breakdown, and being approached by a cult follower. Set one year after the events of Hell House LLC II, the hotel is on the verge of being torn down when it is purchased by billionaire Russell Wynn as the new home for his popular interactive show, Insomnia. He invites journalist Venessa Sheppard and her crew to record everything happening inside the hotel leading up to the performance - but they soon encounter a more nefarious plot, one that threatens to unleash a veritable hell on earth. The film’s narrative provides connections to previous films and the franchise’s lore involving the hotel and cult leader Andrew Tully. That’s the premise of writer/director Stephen Cognetti’s Hell House LLC, a low-budget, found footage masterpiece that has spawned a full-on franchise. The film, shot as a documentary, follows a group of Halloween haunted house creators as they prepare for the 2009 opening of their popular haunted attraction Hell House. The documentary crew, led by producer Diane Graves, interview people familiar with the case and find rumors of something supernatural behind the tragedy.

Five years after an unexplained malfunction causes the death of 15 tour-goers and staff on the opening night of a Halloween haunted house tour, a documentary crew travels back to the scene of the tragedy to find out what really happened. In 2011, the film's executive producers asked for a script revolving around a haunted attraction gone wrong. Casting took place in New York City in February 2014, and production took place shortly after, in May. Initially, the filmmakers were in search of an abandoned house to shoot the film in, as the original script had the events taking place in a house. As early as 2012, the director had been visiting many abandoned buildings and homes, including two in the New York county where the story takes place, Rockland County, New York.

The recovered film reels are sent to Bradley, who includes them in the documentary, depicting footage recorded by Catherine prior to and after Margaret’s death; revealing Margaret to be the masked woman. Further footage reveals Patrick joined Tully’s cult with the hope to resurrect Margaret, moving the clowns into his bedroom, keeping Margaret’s costume as a memento. Later, the cult members invade the manor, where Catherine is killed by Margaret’s ghost. There are a lot of found-footage movies out there, but not many have infused this much detail into their world-building, certainly not enough to sustain four films (though that’s being kind to part three, by far the weakest entry).

Diane and her cameraman break in and see the aftermath of what unfolded that night.
Despite the disturbances, the Hell House company dismisses the ominous signs and proceeds with opening the haunted attraction, leading to a nightmarish encounter with supernatural entities that results in the death of 15 people.

Everyone has a camera, everyone’s filming all the time, and thanks to Carmichael Manor’s documentary frame story, we know it doesn’t end well for anyone. Sara, who is interviewed by the documentary crew in a nearby hotel, asks for a break from filming. She tells Diane she will be in her hotel room - room 2C - if the team has questions.
He taunts Belasco, declaring him a "son of a whore", and that he was no "roaring giant", but instead more likely a "funny little dried-up bastard" who fooled everyone about his alleged height. Even as objects begin to hurl themselves at Fischer, he continues to defy the entity, and insults Belasco's physical stature. Fischer then concentrates, and a stained-glass partition in the chapel shatters, revealing a hidden door. Possessed by the malevolent spirit, Tanner attempts to destroy it, thinking that it will harm the spirits in the house, but she is prevented from doing serious damage. She enters the chapel, "the unholy heart" of the house, in an attempt to warn the spirits, but she is crushed by a falling crucifix.

Doesn’t that bartender have pale-white eyes, just like many of the Abaddon Hotel’s many permanent guests? This hidden-in-plain-sight theme continues throughout the saga, so searching for ghosts in the background makes for a fun game with repeated viewings. The opening scene of Hell House LLC includes a clip of “leaked“ YouTube footage, taken from a haunted house goer’s phone, from inside the Abbadon Hotel on October 9, 2009. Audiences have not yet been introduced to the movie’s main cast members, which may be why the sweary, slurring bartender and that guy with the massive axe go completely unremarked upon.

The rock band originally formed in 1985 and instantly gained mainstream success with incredible debut album and biggest single Don’t Dream It’s Over, which came out in 1986. Finn’s most iconic song is, without a doubt, “Don’t Dream It’s Over” – you know, the “Hey Now, Hey Now” song. It has transcended mere “classic” status over the years to become one of the most enduring music anthems of the past several decades, inspiring sing-alongs to this day. Neil wrote this song in less than 24 hours, something this podcast has revealed to be quite common for artists when creating their most lasting, signature songs.

A new compilation album, The Very Very Best of Crowded House, was released in October 2010 to celebrate the band's 25th anniversary.[39] It includes 19 of the band's greatest hits and is also available in a box set with a 25 track DVD of their music videos. A deluxe digital version, available for download only, has 32 tracks including a rare 1987 live recording of the band's version of the Hunters & Collectors song "Throw Your Arms Around Me". No mention of this album has been made on the band's official website or Twitter page, which suggests that they are not involved with its release. Finn and Hester performed "Not the Girl You Think You Are" with Largest Living Things, before being joined by Seymour for "Sister Madly" and a version of Paul Kelly's "Leaps and Bounds", which also featured Kelly on vocals. Hester and Seymour were reunited when they both joined singer-songwriter Matt O'Donnell's Melbourne-based group Tarmac Adam.[34] The band released one album, 2003's Handheld Torch, which was produced by Seymour. It is considered the band's signature song and has been covered by various artists since its release.

Through it all, Finn touches on his continuing “out of the box” musical journey, from Split Enz, to Crowded House, to solo artist, to Fleetwood Mac — and what’s next for it all. The verses of “Don’t Dream It’s Over” represent challenges and obstacles. The contrasting chorus of the song, which features the message “Don’t Dream It’s Over”, portrays a sense of hope and optimism. The lyrics resonate with me deeply, serving as a reminder to embrace the freedom and possibilities available to me, even in the face of challenges. The chorus, with its powerful declaration that they won’t win, has been a source of strength during moments when it felt like the world was trying to tear me down.

The track was later used on AIDS awareness commercials in Australia.[9] Five of the album's tracks were Neil's solo compositions and two were by Hester, the exuberant "Italian Plastic", which became a crowd favourite at concerts[9] and the hidden track "I'm Still Here". Crowded House released “Don’t Dream It’s Over” as a single on 20 October 1986. The song reached North America a few months later, where it peaked at number 2 on the US charts and topped the Canadian charts. Someone later funnily remarked to Finn that if they had titled the song “Hey Now” it would’ve topped the US charts too. The band originally formed in the mid 80s, finding success globally through into the 90s when they released compilation album Recurring Dream.
As we dissect the lyrics, the song paints a vivid picture of the complexities of life. There is a sense that despite the battles we face and the challenges that may arise, there is still freedom and possibility available to us. The line “Try to catch a deluge in a paper cup” beautifully captures the idea of trying to contain something vast and overwhelming in something small and fragile. Agents in markets like Los Angeles and New York chase stardom as fervently as they chase deals.
In a world that can often feel disconnected and divided, “Don’t Dream It’s Over” remains a powerful reminder of the human capacity for hope and resilience. Through its haunting melody and optimistic lyrics, the song speaks to a universal struggle that we all face at some point in our lives. Whether we’re dealing with the challenges of a new environment or simply striving to achieve our dreams, “Don’t Dream It’s Over” encourages us to keep going and never give up.
In fact he repeats the expanding “Hey now, hey now” line twice as the lyrics themselves expand (“They come, they come / To build a wall between us”). Crowded House helped launch a new post-New Wave era in pop music in 1986, creating beautifully simple, earthy melodies driven by guitars rather than synths. And Finn continues to record as a solo artist as well, not to mention joining Fleetwood Mac in 2018. As the primary songwriter for the band, Neil Finn has always set the tone for the band's sound. AllMusic said that Finn "has consistently proven his knack for crafting high-quality songs that combine irresistible melodies with meticulous lyrical detail."[59] Neil's brother Tim was an early and important musical influence.
“Selling Sunset,” in which an ensemble cast of couture-clad agents bickers and bids in six-inch heels, premiered in 2019 and quickly became one of Netflix’s most popular shows. The company has good reason to think a legal challenge could be successful, having seen some success in previous legal fights over its operations in the U.S. In November, a federal judge blocked a Montana law that would ban TikTok use across the state after the company and five content creators who use the platform sued. The House has passed legislation that would ban TikTok in the United States if the popular social media platform’s China-based owner doesn’t sell its stake within a year, but don’t expect the app to go away any time soon.
Texas’ ban was challenged last year by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, which argued in a lawsuit that the policy was impeding academic freedom because it extended to public universities. The U.S. government has not publicly provided evidence that shows TikTok shared U.S. user data with the Chinese government or tinkered with the company’s popular algorithm, which influences what Americans see. Adding to the group’s long list of tour dates is On The Mount At Wasing festival in Reading this summer. Nostalgia has truly taken over this year with everyone from Faithless to The Feeling riding that lucrative reunion wave. Harry Wayne Casey tells the stories behind KC and The Sunshine Band hits like "Get Down Tonight," "That's The Way (I Like It)," and "Give It Up." As I journey through life, this song will always remain a constant reminder of the strength and possibility that lie within me.

Crowded House undertook an extensive world tour in 2010 in support of Intriguer. This was the first album where the band regularly interacted with fans via the internet on their own re-launched website, Twitter and Facebook. The band sold recordings of the shows on the Intriguer tour on USB flash drives and made individual live tracks available for free download. The accompanying video has Finn walking through a house in which other members of Crowded House are sitting around, sometimes playing their instruments. The house is a weatherboard; we even see a slice of toast spread with Vegemite. When the organ solo comes, the windows of this house are suddenly arched and have stained glass.
Fueled by the public’s love of reality TV and desire to view luxury homes, real estate agents are chasing fame as fervently as they chase deals. Nadya Okamoto, a content creator who has roughly 4 million followers on TikTok, said she has been having conversations with other creators who are experiencing “so much anger and anxiety” about the bill and how it’s going to affect their lives. The 26-year-old, whose company, August, sells menstrual products and is known for her advocacy around destigmatizing menstrual periods, makes most of her income from TikTok. Members of both parties, along with intelligence officials, have worried that Chinese authorities could force ByteDance to hand over American user data or direct the company to suppress or boost TikTok content favorable to its interests. TikTok has denied assertions that it could be used as a tool of the Chinese government and has said it has not shared U.S. user data with Chinese authorities. The bill’s quick path through Congress is extraordinary because it targets one company and because Congress has taken a hands-off approach to tech regulation for decades.
The chorus, which serves as the heart of the song, implores us not to give up or let go of our dreams. It reminds us that even when the world seems intent on building walls between us, we have the power to resist and overcome. The line “They come, they come to build a wall between us, we know they won’t win” celebrates the strength of human connection and the resilience of the human spirit.
Through its thought-provoking lyrics, the song encourages us to hold on to our dreams, resist the walls that the world may try to build between us, and cherish the relationships that bring us liberation and release. Stepping back up a semitone to A flat, the melody of the chorus is more expansive – literally so, as it opens out from a falling perfect fourth on the first “Hey now” to a falling major sixth on the second, to a rising octave (B flat to falsetto B flat) on “Don’t dream”, coming down the scale to the tonic on “it’s over”. The harmony is simple stuff (IV–V–I), but it’s effective so, like the first two lines of the verse, Finn repeats it.
On 19 August 2021, the band performed their single “To the Island” on CBS's The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. On 2 December 2021, the band announced that it will be touring Australia in 2022, with 6 shows around the country, including the 2022 Bluesfest lineup.[55] On 24 June 2022, the band played at Glastonbury Festival.[56][57] In May 2023, Crowded House tour North America for the promotion of the album Dreamers Are Waiting. Music has an undeniable impact on our emotions and helps us process complex feelings when words alone simply aren’t enough. One of the most powerful songs in this regard is “Don’t Dream It’s Over” by the New Zealand band Crowded House.
With its memorable melody, haunting lyrics, and persistent optimism, this song has resonated with millions of people around the world since its release in 1986. In this article, we’ll explore the deeper meaning behind “Don’t Dream It’s Over” and how it speaks to our universal struggles and dreams. Since mid-March, TikTok has spent $5 million on TV ads opposing the legislation, according to AdImpact, an advertising tracking firm. The ads have included a diverse group of content creators, including a nun, extolling the positive impacts of the platform on their lives and arguing a ban would trample on the 1st Amendment.

Additionally, the song’s call for human connection and the importance of cherishing our relationships with others deeply resonates within me. It serves as a reminder to nurture the connections that bring joy and light into our lives, as they can be a source of liberation and release. In 1991, English musician Paul Young covered "Don't Dream It's Over" on his first compilation album, From Time to Time – The Singles Collection (1991). Young's version, released by Columbia, was produced by Dan Hartman, and featured Paul Carrack singing the fourth chorus and performing the keyboard and synthesizers. All tracks on vinyl, from the album Crowded House except the extended version of "Don't Dream It's Over".
Songwriting and musical influences
One of the most dynamic bass player/songwriters of his time, Chris is the only member of Yes who has been with the band since they formed in 1968. Crowded House’s lead singer and songwriter Neil Finn has said that “Don’t Dream It’s Over” was inspired by his experiences living in Los Angeles and feeling disconnected from his homeland of New Zealand. The song was written during a time when Finn was struggling with homesickness and a sense of displacement, which inspired him to write a song that expressed the human desire for connection and a sense of belonging.
The Inspiration Behind the Song
Lawmakers had failed to act despite efforts to protect children online, safeguard users’ privacy and make companies more liable for content posted on their platforms, among other measures. But the TikTok ban reflects widespread concerns from lawmakers about China. The company has indicated that it would likely go to court to try to block the law if it passes, arguing it would deprive the app’s millions of users of their 1st Amendment rights.

The opening lines (“There is freedom within, there is freedom without / Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup”) suggest that despite our limitations, we still have the capacity to find meaning and wonder in the world. The chorus (“Hey now, hey now / Don’t dream it’s over / Hey now, hey now / When the world comes in / They come, they come / To build a wall between us / We know they won’t win”) embodies an unshakable optimism, reminding us that despite the challenges we face, we can persevere as long as we don’t give up on our dreams. Following the 1996 break-up of Crowded House, the members embarked upon a variety of projects. Neil Finn released two solo studio albums, Try Whistling This (1998) and One Nil (2001), as well as two live albums, Sessions at West 54th (2000) and 7 Worlds Collide (2001).
The song has become a constant companion throughout various phases of my life, always providing comfort and solace. It has accompanied me during times of uncertainty, reminding me to stay resilient and not give up on my dreams. "Don't Dream It's Over" is written and composed in the key of E-flat major[13] and is set in the time signature of common time with a tempo of 82 beats per minute. He said he thinks there could have been less restrictive ways to go after the company that wouldn’t result in a total ban or threaten free speech. In 2020, federal courts blocked an executive order issued by then-President Trump to ban TikTok after the company sued on the grounds that the order violated free speech and due process rights.

His administration brokered a deal that would have had U.S. corporations Oracle and Walmart take a large stake in TikTok. The sale never went through for a number of reasons; one was China, which imposed stricter export controls on its technology providers. After UMG pulled its catalog from the app and as political pressure - or even a domestic ban - threatens its viability, artists and their creative and business teams are pondering a world without it. The House’s overwhelming vote to ban TikTok unless it is freed from Chinese control suggests that a ban might be coming soon. The new multi-million-dollar deal will see the leading independent publisher acquiring Finn’s music publishing catalog and writer’s share of public performance for his work with Crowded House, in addition to his solo material.
The Meaning Behind “Don’t Dream It’s Over” by Crowded House
The decision by House Republicans to include TikTok as part of a larger foreign aid package, a priority for President Biden with broad congressional support for Ukraine and Israel, fast-tracked the ban after an earlier version had stalled in the Senate. A standalone bill with a shorter, six-month selling deadline passed the House in March by an overwhelming bipartisan vote as Democrats and Republicans voiced national security concerns about the app’s owner, the Chinese technology firm ByteDance Ltd. “I look forward to seeing Primary Wave’s plan for the ongoing care of my songs.

All live tracks, recorded on Phil Jupitus Show at BBC GLR, 21 June 1996. Unlike the Oscars or the Golden Globes, these awards didn’t go to actors, directors or screenwriters. Along with live gigs, a new single has been released — Teenage Summer — with an unexpected album on the way, which will be the first since the band parted ways in 2018.
Despite the universality of the song and Finn’s seeming lack of recollection of the song’s origin, he later revealed to Consequence that the song was ‘in a sense’ written as a ‘private message from me to someone who was withdrawing from their world’. “Don’t Dream It’s Over” is a song about remaining hopeful in the face of adversity. The song’s message seems to be told from the perspective of a relationship, with the narrator urging his loved one to not give up.
Crowded House is no different as the Australian band — plus New Zealander Neil — release their eight studio album Gravity Stairs next month. In this sixth episode of The Story Behind the Song, host Peter Csathy interviews Finn about “Don’t Dream It’s Over” and how it came to be. The two also discuss Neil’s beautiful love song “Fall at Your Feet” from Crowded House’s third album, Woodface.

Finn admitted that producer Mitchell Froom was responsible for the sound of the song. He suggested some essential elements of the song, including the bass line and the Hammond organ. “He filled in quite a few areas that we weren’t covering,” bassist Nick Seymour later commented.

The British rocker, 78, has officially listed his European-style Beverly Hills estate for $70 million. It was specially designed for Stewart in the 90s by celeb-favorite architect Richard Landry, who also built Mark Wahlberg's Beverly Hills compound and Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen's former Brentwood mega-mansion. Refining these collections into a coherent, atmospheric, technologically advanced house has kept Hendrix/Allardyce busy since ground was broken in the early 1990s. "Rod wanted the house to feel like an English country estate," says Allardyce. "To us that meant creating the home of a well-traveled individual who has amassed a collection of very fine antiques, art and decorative arts over a lifetime, and combining them in a Neoclassical-style interior."
That breaks down into $1,522 per square foot and a monthly payment of $138,969. It was later dethroned by the massive 550-acre Big Tree Farm, a rural retreat with more than 50,000 square feet of interior space that hit the market in September 2022 for a mindboggling $47.9 million. The main property boasts an impressive 20,000 square feet of living space, including six bedrooms, eight full baths, and three half baths.

He began opening for comics like Joe Rogan and Jeff Ross; the latter helped Hinchcliffe land writing gigs on “Comedy Central Roast,” where he penned Martha Stewart’s raunchy zingers for Justin Bieber, among others. In 2013, he launched his podcast “Kill Tony” with co-host Brian Redban. The podcast is famed for its “Bucket of Destiny,” giving aspiring and seasoned comedians a shot at performing a stand-up set for 60 seconds and receiving feedback from judges — and getting roasted. In 2020, Hinchcliffe moved himself and the podcast to Austin, Texas, where he continues to put out weekly episodes. I couldn’t believe it when that video came out, and it was one of my former openers doing it. It was so dumbfounding to me because it was a joke, and my stance is that comedians should never apologize for a joke, should never stop working if everyone comes after them and should never slow down. In fact, they should utilize anything that happens to them for more material. That line is exactly where I love to exist, and I push that to the limits.
Highlights include a massive formal dining room that can accommodate over 20 guests, a speakeasy, a movie theater, two gyms, and a wood-paneled library. Elsewhere, Stewart’s pad continues to impress with a wine room, an eat-in chef’s kitchen, and a dedicated tearoom. (Very British!) Outside, the grounds sport a five-car garage, dual motor courts, a swimming pool, and an outdoor kitchen. Tony Stewart‘s mansion is back on the market again at a “lower” price. According to multiple outlets, the NASCAR legend’s 400-acre Hidden Hollow Ranch in Columbus, Indiana, has been relisted at $22.5 million.
